Hopeful Reform

Hopeful Reform

It is not just about a sales tax…

Senator Frank Morse addressed Shangri-La Board of Directors and Stakeholders at a Board of Director’s Re-Charge meeting in late May. Senator Morse is a champion for Shangri-La and our colleagues in working to gain adequate funding. He has worked hard to be sure our “Small Voices” are heard. He also is dedicated to helping Oregonians understand that no matter how great the need and how just our request is, change in Oregon’s fiscal policy is needed to maintain stable funding for all of Oregon’s services and operations. Senator Morse helped us see that there is not a single solution for Oregon’s biggest problem, our fiscal policies. He explained that there are two key problems that need to be solved:

  1. the lack of a stable funding source and the accumulated results of deferred and inadequate spending and
  2. the instability of revenue, which is compounded by the tax code and the inability to create a Rainy Day Fund.

Encourage all Shangri-La Stakeholders to take an open-minded look at Senator Morse’s full proposal. Many of us who have had “no sales tax/no reform opinions” have had our eyes opened by his creative, non-partisan approach to healing some gaping wounds in Oregon’s fiscal policy.
